In recent months, while preparing the masterclass for the 50th anniversary of Falerio DOC, we often found ourselves reflecting, among ourselves and with Pietro Russo MW, on what it truly means today to craft a blended wine.

For us, wine is a story. It's not just a label to display, but a journey woven from unpredictable seasons, insights born from walking the vineyards, courageous choices, mistakes, and small discoveries. And the blend has always been the most authentic way we know to tell that entire story.
When we craft a wine through assemblage, we're doing more than just combining different batches. We're weaving together distinct voices. The voice of the soil, the season's weather, the vines themselves, the unique qualities of each vintage, and our personal sensitivity. Every single grape variety adds its own facet of character, and our challenge is to discover an equilibrium that isn't flawless, but authentic.

In an era when wine was a family's lifeline and security was a luxury, our grandparents diversified their vineyards. They'd plant a mix of varieties—some more yielding, others more fragile; some ripening early, some late—all to brave the unpredictable years. It was their ingenious method to guarantee a harvest, but equally, to craft wines that were richer, fuller, and more resilient.
Now, as seasons turn ever more quickly, that ancient wisdom feels more vital than ever. Blending is our way to adapt, letting us remain faithful to our signature style effortlessly, by simply interpreting the vineyard's message, vintage after vintage.
This approach also leads to a more natural and respectful cultivation. Integrating diverse varieties into one vineyard creates a more harmonious growing cycle, allowing us to better manage harvest schedules and fostering rich biodiversity, both within the vines and their surroundings. It's a slower pace, but one that leads to a much more lively outcome.
In an era that often worships the single grape, turning its name into a mere trademark and overshadowing all else, we hold a different conviction. We believe the genuine protagonist must be the land itself: its geological makeup, its unique climate, and the hands and hearts of the people who inhabit and cultivate it. And it's through blending, more than any other wine, that we can fully express this intricate complexity. It returns the focus to the terroir, where it belongs, rather than just the varietal.
For us, purity was never the point. The Piceno, much like the soul of rural Italy, thrives on blends, contaminations, and diverse interactions. The notion of a rigid, single-minded identity is something new. We've always found strength in the richness that differences bring. And our wine, naturally, embodies every bit of this.
To us, blending a wine is an artisanal, almost artistic act. It's not about rigid formulas; instead, it calls for careful listening, seasoned experience, and a clear vision. This is how we aim to express who we are, seeking—and sometimes pursuing—the perfect equilibrium between all the unique elements each new vintage offers.
